Pregnancy Q&A

What is pregnancy care?

Pregnancy care or prenatal care includes evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment if needed for pregnant women and their unborn babies. The highly-trained providers at LUNA MED SPA & WASHINGTON OB-GYN, P.A. are board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and experts in their field.

What are the benefits of pregnancy care?

Some of the many benefits you can experience with top-quality pregnancy care at LUNA MED SPA & WASHINGTON OB-GYN, P.A. include:

  • Better pregnancy outcomes
  • Healthy babies
  • Low risk of preterm birth
  • Low risk of low birth weight
  • Fewer pregnancy complications
  • Improved well-being for you and your baby
  • Chronic disease management
  • High-risk and low-risk care

Routine prenatal care allows your provider to detect or rule out problems before they become serious. It gives you and your baby the best chance of maintaining a healthy pregnancy, labor, and delivery.

What happens during prenatal visits?

During your first prenatal visit at LUNA MED SPA & WASHINGTON OB-GYN, P.A., a provider weighs you and checks your height, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs. They review your medical history, discuss your lifestyle, and complete a physical examination – including a pelvic exam and Pap test if needed.

Your provider often recommends you complete a urine test, blood test, and ultrasound when necessary. Depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy, they may listen to your baby’s heartbeat and measure your abdomen.

Your obstetrics provider calculates your estimated due date, offers health and nutrition education, gives advice about which prenatal vitamins to take, and addresses questions or concerns you have about your pregnancy.

Subsequent pregnancy care visits could take less time than your initial appointment. It depends on whether you require an ultrasound, blood tests, genetic testing, gestational diabetes screening, other diagnostic tests, or treatment.

When should I schedule pregnancy care appointments?

The number of prenatal visits you should schedule depends on whether your pregnancy is classified as low- or high-risk. You might attend check-ups once monthly initially and schedule appointments every two weeks or weekly as you approach your due date.

High-risk pregnancies often require more frequent visits. Your provider may classify your pregnancy as high-risk if you’re over age 35, have a chronic disease, or have a history of pregnancy complications.

Contact the LUNA MED SPA & WASHINGTON OB-GYN, P.A. office if you experience new or unusual symptoms, such as pelvic pain, bleeding, or decreased fetal movement.
